FAIRFIELD—Travis Air Force base screamed to life again, Saturday, soaring right into the hearts of the public. After the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the Travis Air Show had been put on hold for security reasons.
“Mostly the bi-planes doing their thing, the stunt pilots doing their part and bringing everyone in for the show, they’re doing some amazing things out here, the size of the engine types of aircraft, it’s absolutely amazing,” said pilot, John Dyson.
“It’s a little scary, but so exciting and so cool, it’s great for the kids to see and experience that, said spectator, Michelle Dyson.
But it’s taken four years for all this excitement, and the Thunderbirds, to come back to Fairfield.
After 9-11, security was tightened and air shows screeched to a halt, only to stay that way, until now when it’s better and safer than before.
“Security threats were the biggest thing we’ve taken a lot of efforts with security as you’ve seen coming through the gates, and we’ve overcome a lot of issues that were taking place,” said Major Thomas Pauly, air show coordinator.
The air show couldn’t have come back at a better time. With hundreds of thousands of military personnel serving around the world, this is a great way to recruit fresh faces and to show the public what the Air Force is all about.
“I have goose bumps when I see them do some of these tricks, it’s fascinating,” said Bryan Bix, an Air Force hopeful.
Bix is hooked, he started in the Air Force as a junior ROTC, and wanted to see what he’ll be doing when he grows up.
“They really express how we can help for freedom and our country and it really shows patriotism, even though we might be kids we have the option open to us,” said Bix.
“When they see the airplanes flying, it gets them motivated, we want them to come and say I want to be a part of the Air Force and serve my country and take that time, it’s outstanding,” said Major Pauly.
