Global Warming Too Hot for SF Museum
Published: August 23, 2006

SAN MATEO, Calif. (AP) - Officials at the Coyote Point Museum said they will likely reject a proposal to scrap the struggling wildlife learning center to build a global warming education center with ties to former Vice President Al Gore.

Coyote Point officials set off a wave of community opposition this month when they said they were considering the proposal from the Gore-backed 11th Hour Project, a Silicon Valley group that seeks to educate the public about climate change.

The 11th Hour Project appeared to back off from its proposal Tuesday. It released a statement saying it was “considering a variety of potential sites in the Bay Area” for the center on global warming, which is the subject of Gore’s documentary film, “An Inconvenient Truth.”

Corrina Marshall, the museum’s interim executive director, said Tuesday that over the last three weeks the museum had received a huge number of responses from community members upset they could lose the Peninsula’s only center focused on local wildlife and ecosystems.

The museum board planned to consider a proposal to preserve the wildlife center from a community group, the Campaign to Save Coyote Point Museum, which has raised more than $400,000 from about 450 people, Marshall said.

“The 11th Hour Project’s proposal was great, but this really matches what the community wants,” she said.
